Polymer networks which locally rotate to accommodate stresses, torques, and deformation

چکیده
Polymer network models construct the constitutive relationships of a broader polymer from behavior single chain (e.g. viscoelastic response to applied forces, electromagnetic fields, etc.). Network have been used for multiscale phenomena in variety contexts such as rubber elasticity, soft multifunctional materials, biological and even curing polymers. For decades, myriad developed with differing numbers chains, arranged different ways, symmetries. To complicate matters further, there are also competing assumptions how macroscopic variables deformation) related individual chains within model. In this work, we propose simple, intuitive assumption locally rotates relative loading stresses, external fields) show that unifies many disparate models–while recovering one most successful Arruda–Boyce 8-chain The new is then shown make more predictions (than prior models) stimuli-responsive networks orientational energies electroactive polymers), which significant shape morphing designing high degree freedom actuators robotics). Lastly, unveil some surprising consequences model phases multistable biopolymer semi-crystalline networks.

Spinal circuits can accommodate interaction torques during multijoint limb movements
The dynamic interaction of limb segments during movements that involve multiple joints creates torques in one joint due to motion about another. Evidence shows that such interaction torques are taken into account during the planning or control of movement in humans. Two alternative hypotheses could explain the compensation of these dynamic torques. One involves the use of internal models to cen...
متن کاملDeformation of cross-linked semiflexible polymer networks.
Networks of filamentous proteins play a crucial role in cell mechanics. These cytoskeletal networks, together with various cross-linking and other associated proteins largely determine the (visco)elastic response of cells. In this Letter we study a model system of cross-linked, stiff filaments in order to explore the connection between the microstructure under strain and the macroscopic respons...
متن کاملDirect observation of nonaffine tube deformation in strained polymer networks.
We present a one-to-one comparison of polymer segmental fluctuations as measured by small angle neutron scattering in a network under deformation with those obtained by neutron spin echo spectroscopy. This allows an independent proof of the strain dependence of the chain entanglement length. The experimentally observed nonaffine square-root dependence of the tube channel on strain is in excelle...

متن کاملNanoindentation of explosive polymer composites to simulate deformation and failure
Crack initiation and propagation is a common concern for molecular composites such as plastic bonded explosives (PBXs) and pharmaceutical tablets. Under compressive stresses, cracks form at contacts between crystals and propagate along crystal-binder interfaces, causing composite failure. To investigate this process, crystal-binder interfaces have been characterised and their mechanical propert...
